Abstract:

Background: Morganella genus is found in the environment and gastro-intestinal of humans. These organisms are one of the causes of urinary tract infection, bacteremia, wound infections and other infections. In the present study, ESBL-producing Morganella spp. isolated from fecal of patients has been studied. Methods: From November 2014 to February 2015, 204 stool samples Obtained from outpatients and inpatients (none of these patients suffered diarrhea). The isolates were cultured in CTX-MC-Conkey agar. Lactose negative and cefotaxime resistant (2 mg/L) bacteria were identified by conventional biochemical tests, and ESBL-producing isolates were detected by using combined disc diffusion test. The blaTEM, blaSHV and blaCTX genes were investigated by PCR. Results: 5 (2.45 %) isolates of 204 stool samples were identified as ESBL producing Morganella spp. Of the 5ESBL-producing strains of stool samples, blaTEM was detected in all isolated, blaSHV was not detected in any of them and blaCTX was detected in 2 (0.98%) of isolates. All isolates of carrier patients were resistant to ampicillin, amoxyclave and ceftazidime and ceftazidime-clavulanic acid. Conclusion: Although the number of ESBL-producing Morganella spp. isolates from fecal carriers are low; but still they can be considered as reservoir of blaTEM and blaCTX genes; thus carrier are also able to transfer these resistant bacteria to hospitals.
