HEALTH AND RISK ASSESSMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN MIDDLE-AGED MEN IN BUSHEHR PROVINCE-2018

Abstract:

Background and Aim : Middle-aged men have an economically and biologically productive role, and their mortality, disability, and behaviors affect all aspects of family health. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main causes of mortality and disability in the world. Many risk factors are involved in cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, high cholesterol, overweight and obesity, smoking, diabetes, inadequate physical activity, unhealthy diet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the health status and risk of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged men in Bushehr province.Methods : This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was performed on men aged 30-60 year in Bushehr province during the first 6 months of 2018. The electronic health records of 11229 men were checked and their risk assessments for the prevention of myocardial infarction, stroke and their integrated diabetes care, hypertension and lipid abnormalities were assessed. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.Results : Results showed that, the history of smoking in the past 12 months, diabetes, hypertension, myocardial infraction and stroke was 989 (8.8%), 393 (3.5%), 370 (3.3%), 87 (0.8%), 48 (0.4%) respectively. The rate of Overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity were 4114 (36.6%), 1661 (14.8%) and 5434 (48.8%), respectively. Also, 846 men (7.7%) were pre-diabetic, 253 (2.3%) suspected to diabetes, 1510 (13.5%) had cholesterol levels above 200, 2591 (23.1%) were pre- hypertension and 411 (3.7%) had hypertension. The final evaluation revealed that only 2782men (24.8%) had no risk of CVD in the next ten years and 8120 (72.3%) had a risk of less than 10%, 11 (0.1) had a risk of 10- 30% and 316 patients (2.8%) had a risk of 30% or higher.Conclusion : the importance of managing risk factors in order to reduce burden of CVD in the middle age men is evident, multiple and long-term interdisciplinary planning is recommended to prevent complications and physical disability.
