Abstract:

Background and Aim : Men play a key role in the reproductive consequences of their wives and children. Considering the importance of men s participation in women s sexual and reproductive health, the purpose of the present study is to review of men s Participation in Unwanted Pregnancy and Related FactorsMethods : In this study, all articles published in the period of 2000 to 2019 were searched full-texts in both English and Persian in English databases including: Science Direct PubMed Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Persian database including: Magiran, SID, and Barkat knowledge Network System. Keywords included male participation , unwanted pregnancy , role of men and prevention of unwanted pregnancy . A total of 22 articles were included in the study after a preliminary review and a listing of references.Results : The main results of this review were divided into five categories: 1) masculine factors associated with unintended pregnancy (irregular use of condoms education, age and occupation), 2) Masculine barriers associated with using safe methods) poor spouse communication about family planning, and other reproductive goals), 3) Masculine reasons for not using safe contraception (Fear of drug side effects of contraception, Patriarchal concepts, gender roles defined by society) 4) The rate of men s participation in family (women s participation in family planning is 6 times more comparing to men while this rate is up to 20 times more than men is some provinces )and 5) Prevalence of unwanted pregnancy (26.7% to 40% reported in studies). From 32% in 2000 to 21% in 2009 and since then, it has remained almost the same).Conclusion : Several factors are effective in men s participation in preventing unwanted pregnancy, such as education, age, and occupation. It is essential to promote men s participation in unwanted pregnancy prevention and identify these factors and plan for reducing negative factors and reinforcing positive factors
