Abstract:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the human central nervous system with still unknown etiology. It is characterized by demyelinating and neurodegeneration. Chemokines and chemokine receptors can mediate the migration of immune cells like T cells and macrophages from blood to central nervous system. They also play the main role in the trafficking of immune cells across the blood-brain barrier, and regulate their transfer to lesion sites Methods:Peripheral blood was obtained from 40 patients and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Plasma levels of CCL-20 were measured by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The gene expression of CCR-6 was evaluated using real-time PCR methods. Results: The gene expression of CCR-6,as well as plasma levels of its ligand (CCL-20),were significantly higher in MS patients in comparison with healthy subjects (P=0.008 and P<0.001, respectively). Conclusion: According to this research it seems that chemokine CCL20 and its recptor CCR6 have important rule in MS pathogenesis and are one of the most important components of immune system activity
