Abstract:

Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by some molds specially Aspergillus and Penicilium andresponsible for mycotoxicosis in animals and humans. Although some reports demonstratedthat patulin could induce cellular apoptosis and toxicity, there is still not very detailed dataabout the anti-cancer potency of the mycotoxin. To determine the efficacy of patulin fortherapeutic strategies on cervical and colorectal cancers, we investigated its effects on Helaand SW-48 cell lines. Cell lines were exposed to various concentrations of patulin (1, 2, 3and 5 ÂμM) and using methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) and bromo-2′-deoxyuridine(BrdU) assays, the cell viability and apoptosis were evaluated. The results obtained showeda remarkable reduction in the cell viability and induction apoptosis in a dose dependentmanner. The most cytotoxicity rate of all cell lines was obtained in concentration of 5 μM ofpatulin. Our results suggested that patulin could potentially achieve anti-tumor benefits inhuman cervical and colorectal cancers.
