Abstract:

Introduction: Burn is one of the most common domestic injuries and is one of the main causes of death and disability in the population of children and adolescents in less developed countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of burns other than electric shock and evaluate the relationship between different variables among people under the age of 18 years in Fars province. Methods: This cross sectional study in the form of census sampling, examined the data of all of burn injury that notified to the pre-hospital emergency department. The data was extracted in the form of a checklist and diagnostic codes T.20 to T32.9 and external causes X00 to X19 based on the International Classification of Diseases System (ICD-10) for each injured person. In this study, the characteristics of age, sex, event mechanism, percentage and degree of burn of each area of the body, location of incident and outcome were studied. The stata14 software was used to survey the epidemiology of burn in the studied population. Results: The injuries from burns are 147 cases (0.45%) of the total 32,186 injured children and adolescents in 2017-2018 at Fars province. The average age of burn injuries was 5.78 ± 9.08 years, of which 70.59% were male. The proportion of burns with non-chemical hot liquids is 50%, followed by burns caused by explosion of materials and gas appliances with 23.53% and 13.73%, respectively. The upper and lower extremities have the highest frequency of damaged areas. 17% of burns occurred in non-urban areas. The burn has led to the death of three of the injured children and adolescents, all of which occurred in the second half of the year. Conclusion: Given the high incidence of burns, especially burns with non-chemical hot liquids and explosive materials and gas appliances, preventive programs -including attention in home safety and parenting education, are needed to take care of children, especially Kids in the end and early of the year- is essential.
