Abstract:

Background and Aim : Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is considered as a major concern in severely injured patients including burn patients. In-hospital mortality of VTE is significant and its long-term morbidity is considerable. There is few information about the risk of VTE in burn patients. This study was designed to evaluate this risk in burn patients. Methods : In a prospective study, all adult (> 18 years old) patients admitted by acute burn injury in November 2019, in Imam Reza Burn Center were included in this study. Demographic data, and information about mechanism, severity and extend of burn injury were collected by a specifically designed questionnaire and the risk of VTE assessed by Caprini score. Results : In 61 consecutive adult patients, the mean age of patients was 43.5 ± 14.9 years. About half of them (31, 50.8%) were male and the mean burnt total body surface area was 18.7 ± 15.1 years. Eleven patients (18%) were in low risk group (Caprini score <3), 47 patients (77%) were in moderate risk group (Caprini score: 3-8), and 3 patients (5%) were in severe risk group (Caprini score > 8). Conclusion : It seems that the majority of burn patients are at moderate to severe risk for VTE and drug prophylaxis is indicated. More investigation for risk stratification is recommended.
