The effect of educational intervention on childhood Overweight and obesity: A review article

Introduction: The prevalence of obesity in children (having a BMI greater than 2SD) has increased in all societies, especially Iran. In addition, at least 10% of children worldwide are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity not only causes obesity in adults, but it also causes physical and psychological problems in the child. In addition, according to various studies dietary intake and physical activity are the most important factors associated with obesity in children. Therefore, the purpose of this studywas to investigate the effect of educational intervention on overweight and obesity in children. Methods: This study is a review article using various sources on the role of educational intervention on overweight and obesity status of children through library and internet searches and using keywords such as educational intervention, childhood obesity and overweight Farsi and English at PubMed, SID, Science Direct, Medline, Scopous and Iranmedex databases. Results: Based on the studies conducted in this field, it has been observed that educational intervention especially in mothers can significantly increase mothers recognition of their children s obesity. Also, intervention in the intervention group compared to the control group in these studies improved physical health, nutrition modification, weight control, exercise, health and psychologicalhealth. Conclusion: Overall, several studies have shown the effectiveness of educational intervention in reducing overweight and obesity and fat percentage in children.
