Abstract:

Background and Objective: Elongation and calcification of the stylohyoid ligament complex may be correlated with eagle’s syndrome which could cause facial pain or dysphasia.The aim of this study was evaluation the prevalence of stylohyoid ligament calcification in panoramic radiographs in radiology department of dentistry school of Qazvin.Materials and Methods: 827 of patient(466 female and 361 male) that referred to radiology department of dentistry school of Qazvin in semester 93-94 were included to this study.After taking demographic information , panoramic radiographs were taken.The presence of stylohyoid ligament calcification on all panoramic radiographs were determined by three maxillofacial radiologists. Data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software version 20.Finding: Stylohyoid ligament calcification was seen in 78/4% of panoramic radiographs (M> F) that most of them were both-side(66/7%).,respectively.There wasn’t significant relation between sex,age and severity but morphology of segmented was common in men (p<0/03).Conclusion: The results suggest that stylohyoid ligament calcification complex is frequent in Iranian population and its distribution in males is more than females . In addition, calcifications were seen more often at age of 20-30 years, and the extent of calcification did not show a tendency to increase with age.
