Water Consumption in Steel Industry; Today’s Problem, Tomorrow’s Concern

The present study investigates the current and future condition of water consumption in Iranian steel industry. In this regard, first, the overall situation of water resources is discussed in various cases; i.e., the annual precipitation, the level of groundwater, total rate of consumption, etc. Then, an overview of the water consumption in steel industry is presented in existing and future steel plants. This estimating is performed considering the type of product each plant produces as well as water consumption factors obtained from promising data extracted from numerous projects have been undertaken by Foolad Technic Engineering Co. in two recent decades. Finally, comparing the rate of consumption in this industry with the outlook of water resources in Iran, general policies are discussed and several suggestions would be presented.
