Abstract:

Background: Harmful use of alcohol is a major cause of global morbidity andmortality. This study describes the estimation of alcohol consumptions in IranshahrCounty. Methods: From 2016 to 2017, we used NSUM in order to estimate alcohol use inIranshahr. Street-based sampling was employed on 1000 participants aging over 18years and resident for at least 5 years. The estimated size was adjusted forTransmission error and Barrier effect. Results: The frequency of least once alcohol use in the previous year was estimatedamong the general population of Iranshahr in 6580 (CI%59 = 5507.5 – 7650.8). Thefrequency among males was higher than females (0.7% versus 0.02%). Among thoseaged 18 to 30 = was 2.8 times, this frequency was higher than those aged above 30years (1.1% versus 0.4%).Conclusion: Development of community-based programs influencing alcohol usecould help reduce chronic diseases associated with the metabolic risk factors of noncommunicablediseases. This will also involve a multi-dimensional strategy and willrequire intervention at the individual and population levels. Health policymakersand the government need to focus on widespread interventions through communityhealth extension programs. Considering the destructive impact of alcohol on publichealth, the policy-makers must design some plans to reduce such harmful effects, because the preventive intervention is much better than treatment.
