Abstract:

Iran forms one part of the Alpine-Himalayan Belt which shows a high level of seismicity and has experienced destructive earthquake several times in the past. Therefore, it is particularly important to be able to monitor any seismic activity quickly and efficiently. We can achieve this goal by installing modern seismic networks all over the country which can record high-quality digital data and transmit them to a data center in near real time. This allows seismologists to monitor any ongoing seismic activity. The Iranian short period network offers such capabilities by providing digital three-component waveform data. The Iranian seismological short-period network was originally installed in Tehran and Tabriz region in the end of 1995 respectively with 12 and 8 seismic stations. This network consists of eleven subnetworks with 56 stations now. The recorded data in each station which is equipped with 3 short-period SS-1 seismometers is transferred continuously to the centre of related sub-network using telemetric system. The data are transmitted from sub-networks to the data center in Tehran by VPN and Satellite. This network is operated by the Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran which is responsible for reporting occurrence of earthquake in Iran. Actually locating and reporting of occurred events had been started in 1960's by using four World Wide Standard Seismograph Network (WWSSN) stations in this institute. This paper describes the network configuration, data acquisition and routine waveform data processing. The presentation will describe efforts to address procurement of Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC) instrumentation and also the results of analysis the collected data.
