Abstract:

Introduction and background: Cognitive faculties including processing speed, spatial ma nipulation and inhibitory function, may be affected by age increasing and menopause. Therefore without prevention measures, the prevalence of cognitive decline is estimated to increase specially in old age 1 . In spite of development of pharmacological agents like Donepezil for improving memory and cognition, there is a growing interest in medici nal plant practices. Herbal medicines such as Ginkgo biloba and Panax ginseng may have cognitive enhancing effects via neuroprotective and antioxidant properties 2 . This study aims to review the efficacy of medicinal plants on cognition and investigate their advantag.es and disadvantages Methods: In this review, electronic data bases including: PubMed, Google scholar and Science direct, by key words such as cognition, herbal medicines and attention were searched. Studies that published between 2010-2018 were selected by using time filter. We included human clinical trials and animal studies concerning the effect of herbal medi.cines on cognition and excluded non-English and unrelated studies Results: Totally 30 articles were found Google scholar 16, PubMed 10, Science direct 4 ar- ticles . After analysis of titles, abstracts and full texts, only 8 articles fulfilled the inclusion .criteria and included in this study Discussion and conclusion: Our review shows that herbal supplements may be useful for the amelioration of cognitive decline. The herbs: G.biloba, Panax ginseng, Grape seed and Gotu kola can modulate cognitive function but no effect was produced by Paeonia lacti- flora .One study demonstrated that the combined use of Donepezil plus Japanese herbal was more beneficial than Donepezil alone in cognition and brain perfusion. Herbal extracts included flavonoids may have contributed to the memory enhancing effects and their po.tential for cognitive enhancing needs to be investigated in future trials
