Abstract:
Back ground and aim:Despite numerous similarities in the cochlear structure and organ of Corti in mammals, there are several differences which may have vital physiologic implica tions. In this review we discussed the functional organization of the mammalian cochlea .under a comparative perspective Search method:This review was carried out by running a search in various databases including Scopus, Pubmed and ISI Web of Science from 1982 to 2014 using the key words mam.mals, organ of Corti, spiral ganglion, cochlea and hair cell Results:In the organ of Corti, the most important differences among various mammalian species are the number of outer and inner hair cells, the width and length of the basilar .membrane and the length of hairs on outer and inner hair cells Conclusion:The results showed that the structural differences in parameters of hair cells and spiral ganglion cells of mammalian cochlea are major factors which are responsible .for distinctly physiological functions in their auditory system
