Abstract:Background and aim: Alpha-1-antitrypsin is one of the important plasma proteases whose deficiency plays an important role in the development or progression of certain diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of alpha-1-antitrypsin phenotypes in patients with cirrhosis and healthy controls.Material and Methods: The statistical population included all patients with cirrhosis of liver referred to the internal clinic of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences in 2016. The sample size was 42 who were enrolled to study by convenience sampling method. The results of previous researches on healthy individuals were used to control group. After obtaining informed consent, 5 cc of venous blood was taken in fasting state and phenotypes were analyzed by focal electrophoresis. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Fisher exact tests at the significant level of 0.05. results: Results showed that all 42 healthy individuals had MM allele 100% while of 42 patients, 35 83.3% had MM allele, 5 11.9% had MS allele and 2 patients 4.8% had MZ allele. The difference between the two groups was significant p = 0.02 . There was no difference between males and females in allele type p = 0.572 .Conclusion: The results of this study showed that in the population of patients with liver cirrhosis under study, MS and MZ alleles were seen only in patients, while none of these alleles were present in healthy subjects. It seems that MS and MZ alleles can be further investigated as a risk factor for liver cirrhosis.
