Abstract:

In this study, timber harvesting effects were investigated on skid trails. The effects of skidding was evaluate on soil nutrients, pH and organic carbon in skid trails of north of Iran, Pashakola forest. For this purpose, N, P, K, Na, pH and organic carbon values were determined on skid trails and control area. Soil characteristics were examined in two ages (2 years and 7 years skid trail). There were not crucial differences in the values of pH, N, P, K, Na from skid trail and undisturbed area in 2 and 7 years skid trails (p> 0.05). But on 2 years skid trail there was significant difference in values of organic carbon from skid trail and undisturbed area (p=0.018). It could be concluded that skidding caused decrease of chemical properties of the soil but 7 years after harvesting all soil chemical properties were completely recovered on skid trail. Lessening of the herbaceous cover, nutrients and organic matter after skidding leaves the soil vulnerable against erosion; decomposition and mineralization also decrease because of unfavorable soil conditions. Hence, preservation of soil health and prompt establishment of adequate tree regeneration are key elements for sustaining forest productivity.
