Abstract:
Finding the safe ways to prevent the growth of toxigenic fungi in the feed and food is needed for preventing the hazards of fungal toxins. Zearalenone is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium fungi with strong estrogenic effects and widespread occurrence in the world. Lactobacillus reuteri converts glycerol into the potent cell growth inhibitor. This substance, termed reuterin, inhibits the growth of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as yeasts, fungi, and protozoa. The present study was aimed to evaluate the bio-control efficacy of Lactobacillus reuteri, against the growth of Fusarium oxysporum. The cell-free supernatant of Lactobacillus reuteri (CFCS) was prepared and its antifungal activity on Fusarium oxysporum was determined by tube and micro-well dilution methods. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CFCS was determined as 60μL. The growth of Fusarium oxysporum on the CFCS treated samples had a dose dependent manner. The results of the present study revealed the antifungal activity of CFCS of Lactobacillus reuteri against Fusarium oxysporum. The CFCS of Lactobacillus reuteri may be uses in feed and food industry as a natural bio-controlling agent.
