Abstract:

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used in the hot sections of gas turbines. Nanostructured yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as a ceramic top coat increases TBC properties. In this paper nanostructured YSZ (3 mol%. Y.O.) thermal barrier coatings were deposited by air plasma spray (APS) on a St37 substrate. The microstructure of the coating was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and it was observed that a nanostructured coating present a bimodal distribution in its microstructure. In addition, the influence of spraying parameters on properties of nanostructured TBCs were discussed. It was found that nanostructured coatings with fine agglomerate size have an excellent thermal shock resistance and great adhesion strength.
