Abstract:

Background and objective:Occupational stress has become of the most serious health issues in any job. Occupational stress in mothers can affect family relationships and children’s characteristics and behavior. The aim of our study was to investigate any differences between shift and fixed working mothers with high and low occupational stress in their Children s Behavioral Problems.Materials and Methods:The study population was 32 nurse and 23 employed mothers who all had 4-16 years old children as case and control groups. The data were collected using Cooper Occupational Stress Questionnaire and Children s Behavioral Checklist (CBCL) Questionnaire to evaluate occupational stress level and behavioral problems, respectively. T score of CBCL parameters calculated due to questionnaire instructions. SPSS software version 19 was used for data analysis, for comparison between two group independent samples t-test, and correlation was performed due to the relationship of two continuous variables. Results:Means of age was 36.22±4.48 and 37.70±4.83 years in case and control group, work experience was 10.75±4.13 and 13.35± 5.85 years in case and control group, respectively. In case group, in subjects with low and moderate to severe occupational stress, the mean of T score of anxious/depressed problems was 47.264.84 and 54.0010.1 respectively, that had significant difference (p-value=0.042). Such difference did not report in control group. There was a significant relationship between nurses’ occupational stress level and their children’s anxiety/depression problems (r=0.444, P-Value=0.011) and also internalizing disorders (r=0.438, P -Value=0.012), Such relationship did not report in control group. other CBLC parameters did not show a significant relationship with nurse’s occupational stress. Conclusion:our study showed that an increase in the level of nurses’ occupational stress in nurses may lead their children to behavior problems especially anxious/depressed and internalizing symptoms.Message for policymakers:As a suggestion, screening children of nurses in case of behavior problems and managing occupational stressors to decrees nurses stress levels is recommended to prevent further problems.
