Abstract:

Introduction: Diabetes-related foot ulcers represent challenges for patients and the health services. It is the most important cause is non-traumatic limb amputation. To solve and prevent these chronic wounds, advanced wound care technologies need to evolve in response to the growing burden of chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers on healthcare and the debilitating impact chronic wounds have on patient quality of life. So here, we describe innovation in diabetic foot ulcer care: smart bandages technology.Materials and Methods: This paper is a review article conducted by collecting data through library studies and searching databases such as Science Direct, Google Scholar and PubMed in 2015-2019.Results: Smart systems, devices with sensing, responding, or reporting functions, or a combination of these, can address many of the challenges associated with wound healing, particularly for chronic wounds. Smart systems may also promote better wound management, improving clinical outcomes by means such as detecting infections in a timely manner or providing alerts for patients. The results of studies show that application of these bandages will provide insight into wound status and may reduce the frequency at which dressings are changed, allowing for healthcare cost savings and a reduction in patient stress and pain. Discussion and Conclusion: The smart bandages could have a great potential over other existing products, but for the efficacy of these treatments, need more clinical trials and benefits of each treatment should be measured according to the circumstances of each patient and economic conditions.
