Abstract:

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a devastating group of diseases characterized by generalized skin fragility, recurrent blistering, chronic ulceration of the skin and wounding that heals with mutilating scarring. Effective wound therapy is an issue of utmost importance as they often evolve into aggressive Squamous Cell Carcinomas or to sepsis. In this article, we demonstrate accelerated wound healing via using an Erbium-Fractional laser protocol in a forty-two year old man with Dystrophic EB. Within four sessions of laser treatment, he had near-complete re-epithelialization and no blistering or other adverse effects were noted. This novel intervention of using Erb-Fractional laser could help revolutionize wound care for patients who suffer from EB and especially whose chronic non-healing wounds serve as one of their greatest source of morbidity and mortality.
