خلاصه مقاله:
Background and Aim : Medicinal herbs are widely used throughout the world for a variety of reasons, and because of their cost-effectiveness, less side effects than chemical drugs, as well as easy access, theyare commonly used in the treatment of diseases, and their use is a part of the WHO s strategies from 2014to 2023. The objective of the present study is to determine the maternal and fetal complications of honeysaffron (crocus) syrup consumption during childbirth in nulliparous women admitted to childbirth ward ofImam Khomeini Hospital of Divandarreh, 2018.Methods : In this controlled clinical trial, 90 primiparous women were randomly divided into three groups. In the first intervention group, 750 mg saffron syrup made with 75 g of honey and in the second interventiongroup, 750 mg saffron syrup made with artificial sugar, and in the control group, placebo orally every twohours up to three times, was presented so that each given dose was 150 cc, and maternal complications(increased uterine contractions, placental abruption, and allergies to saffron include nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, cutaneous rash, numbness, bloody diarrhea, and nose bleeding) and fetal complications(meconium-stained amniotic fluid, fetal distress, 1 and 5 minute low Apgar scores, and neonatal admissionto a neonatal intensive care unit) were recorded in all the three groups. Fisher s exact test, one-way ANOVAand Bonferroni post-hoc test were used to analyze the data. Results : Based on the results, in this study, demographic and midwifery characteristics werehomogeneous. No neonatal complications were observed in the intervention and control groups during theintervention. The only maternal complication observed during the study was nausea and vomiting, whichwas not statistically significant between the intervention and control groups (P = 0.672) and between thetwo intervention groups (P = 1.000).Conclusion : The results of the present study showed that honey saffron syrup consumption is notassociated with complications for mother and fetus, and it can be used as an effective herbal medicine inthe progress of childbirth. In addition, further studies with larger sample sizes and higher doses arerecommended.
