In this article an analytical model has been derived for a cantilever beam equipped with PZT stack impulse damper to control lateral vibration. In previous works control of a single-degree-of-freedom system has been studied whereas the present article discusses control of the continuum model of a cantilever beam.The basic principle of the impulse damper is to generate suitable impulsive forces by expand-ing or contracting a mass loaded lead zirconium titanate (PZT) stack actuator at suitable states of the system. The stack is expanded by applying a suitable positive voltage across the PZT stack at the instants of the displacement zero-crossings with a positive velocity, and a negative voltage is applied to contract the stack when zero-crossings takes place with a negative velocity. The finite element method (FEM) is employed to model the cantilever beam and the equation of the PZT stack actuator is coupled with the equation of the beam and the additional mass. Ordinary differential equation (ODE) is utilized to solve these equations.It is shown that the beam is controlled by appropriately tuning the damping parameters. Con-trol performance sensitivity to parameter changes has also been studied
