The effect of PVP addition on morphology and structure of electrospun PVA nanofibers

Abstract:
New biopolymers are in high demand due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and natural origin. In this study PVA and blend PVA/PVP nanofibers were fabricated using electrospinning method and the verification in the morphology and structure of obtained nanofibers were considered in the same electrospining condition. In addition, the 10% PVA solution and PVA/PVP solution in a ratio of 1:1 were prepared and injected to the electrospinning device. Nanofibers morphological and chemical characteristics were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The average diameters of nanofibers, that measured using measurement software, were about 161 and 104 nm for PVA and blend PVA/PVP nanofibers respectively. Interestingly, the addition of PVP was conducive to decreasing the average diameter of PVA nanofibers about 50 nano meters. The prepared nanofibers can be used in various fields such as drug delivery, medicine, wound healing, tissue engineering and so on.
