Abstract:
Mechanical parts are most frequently employed to exchange energy between two fluids, it’s demonstrated recently that a shock wave is a new approach to exchange energy between two fluids directly, and the wave rotors as unsteady-flow devices is such a machine that transfers energy between two fluids with various pressure directly through shock waves. The analysis of the shock and expansion waves’ behavior, which is the major focus of analysis of a wave rotor along with a topped engine, is helpful in designing and building such machines with higher efficiencies, which is essential for commercialization of this technology. The calculated performance of engines, which is enhanced with wave rotor show 20-25% increase in specific power (SP) and 16-18 % decrease in specific fuel consumption (SFC) over the baseline engines. Reduction of entropy generation during the heat addition process in wave rotor results in lower SFCs and increased specific power since the wave rotor works at a higher pressure and temperature. Overall, the predicted results are in good agreement with established wave rotor theories and experimental results.
