Abstract:

Friction stir welding (FSW) process is a relatively new welding technique where friction heat is used to forge metal components together. Due to the absence of parent metal melting, the FSW process observed to offer several advantages over fusion welding. AA6XXX and 7XXX Al alloys are two series of the most widely used structural materials in automotive, rail transportation and aerospace industries. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of new cross section in joint line and analyze in detail for furtherimprove on mechanical properties. Joints fabricated using this approach led to better results in terms of joint strength and quality. The fabricated joints exhibitvery good tensile properties with ultimate tensile strength (UTS) higher than 254 MPa and elongation higher than 7%.
