Abstract:

Fish gill is one of the important organs of fish performing a variety of functions. Inthis study, a total number of 10 fish freshly prepared Barbus grypus and their gillswere dissected out from gill compartment. The 5-6 μm sections were made usingparaffin embedding techniques and stained by haematoxylin and eosin (H&E).Barbus grypus gill is consisted of 4 gill arches each has primary lamellae thatsecondary lamellae being diverged from them at one side and the gill rakers on theother side. There are undifferentiated cells, squamous to cuboid-shaped epithelialcells, chloride and mucous cells layer in the primary lamellae epithelium. Thesecondary lamellae have a vascular center containing pillar cells. The secondarylamellae epithelium is very thin and has 1 or 2 cell layers and g undifferentiated andPavement cells. Histometrical results showed that the primary lamellae epithelialthickness is different significantly (P≤0.05) from the secondary lamellae epithelialthickness. Histological structure of Barbus grypus gill is similar to other teleosts andhas no difference with cyprinidae family.
