Abstract:

This paper presents a new nonlinear dynamic model for a flexible land-based vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). The wind turbine system includes a flexible tower and a rigid rotor. The tower is modeled as a tapered Euler–Bernoulli beam with fore-aft and side-side degrees of freedom. The rotor has a rigid angular motion around its axis. The expressions of the aerodynamic normal and tangential forces and the aerodynamic torque on the blades are derived. Lagrange’s equation is used to derive the equations of the motion of the flexible VAWT system. MPC and PID control methods are incorporated into the system to regulate the nominal value of the rotational speed of the rotor. The generator torque is used as the control input to achieve the regulation goal. Results of numerical simulations of the closed-loop system indicate that the MPC method is capable to achieve a higher power output in comparison with the PID method.
