Abstract:
In this paper, we study Iran’s power transmission network by estimating its reliability. Centrality measures from complex network theory are used to designate the most important terminal nodes in the network, upon which the network is decomposed into smaller but tractable sub-networks. Sub-network reliability is then calculated using an exact network reliability algorithm, which has been developed in-house. Based on this platform for calculating network reliability, we then introduce the novel concept of matrix reliability method in order to replace the traditional point-wise or interval-wise reliability estimation methods, as practiced in current literature. We contend that matrix reliability can represent better the distributed nature of reliability in a complex network such as a power network. Case studies are developed to illustrate the applicability and usefulness of the new method.
