Abstract:
This paper analyzed the transitivity of Reading Texts in the American English File 4 textbook based on Halliday’s theory of systemic functional linguistics, in order to find out the factors affecting the analysis result and the benefits that can be gained. The method of the study was both quantitative and qualitative as former presented the frequency of occurrences and the latter described each type of process and the benefit of the most dominant one. The data were collected from the Reading section in the textbook. The result of data analysis showed that the numbers in types of process were: material (44%), mental (20%), relational (25,9%), behavioral (3%), verbal (7 %), and existential (1 %). The most dominant process type used is Material process. That means that many reading texts in American English File 4 textbook contain action, happening, doing things and real world activities. So the benefit of the dominant process used in most of reading texts in this textbook indicated action and real world activities in order to realize the learners needs.
