Abstract:
This article investigates racial issues in the Afro-American novel, The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. The novel recounts the life of a young slave woman, named Cora in the American racial society of the 19th century, and portrays her efforts to obtaining and enjoying her freedom. The hypothesis of the present study is based on the ideas of W. E. B. Du Bois, which covers his critical ideas about racism, includes ‘the veil’, ‘double consciousness’, and ‘second sight’. Racial issues are dominant traits in Whitehead s novel and reflect in its setting, atmosphere, events, and characters. The present study aims to defend the anti-racism idea in the current world, which emphasizes equality and justice between people and also to support the rights of people of color as a minority group.
