Abstract:
Dimethyl ether (DME) which is a very attractive synthetic transportation fuel alternate is synthesized by the dehydration reaction of methanol over -alumina or its modified component as the catalyst. In this study, the objective is to evaluate the effect of fluorine on activity and acidity of this catalyst. These catalysts were prepared by wet-impregnation that modified with various concentrations of NH4F solution (0.1 to 0.5 mol/l) and were used for vapor-phase dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether in a fixed-bed reactor at the same operating conditions (T= 300 oC, P= 1 bar, LHSV= 26.5 h-1 and characterized by means of BET, XRD and NH.-TPD techniques. According to the experimental results, catalyst DHC-AF0.1 which treated by 0.1 mol/l NH&F solution, showed better performance (Total conversion=82.7% & DME selectivity=99.96%) compared to another samples. NH3 -TPD analysis revealed that the above-mentioned sample possesses higher concentration of medium acidic sites and consequently the catalytic activity
