GIS Application for Mapping of Flood Hazard by Causative Factors for Flooding in Northern Iran-Golestan Province

In this paper, the vulnerability of Golestan province (Northern Iran) against flood hazard is analyzed by using the Geographic Information System (GIS). The research is carried out based on 7 flood risk indexes, i.e. runoff effects, soil, ground slope, ground roughness, drainage density, distance to the main channel and land cover. Then, by studying and analyzing of these indexes, important maps are presented in order to determine the effect of each parameter on the studied area. The derived results and produced maps along with the introduced analyses denote the area and regions exposed to possible damages caused by future probable floods.
