Abstract:

A new approach that uses planar batch manufacturing technologies is presented for the design and fabrication of coronary artery stents Stent samples with different wall patterns have been fabricated from 50- m-thick stainless steel foil using micro electro discharge machining. Coronary stenting is increasingly performed either to reprove the result of balloon angioplasty complicated by dissection or acute closure or to reduce the incidence of restenosis. Recent studies suggest that optimized stent deployment by additional expansion can be achieved by high-pressure dilatation, oversizing of balloons, or both.3 4, this procedural strategy has been proposed to improve the apposition of the stent struts against the recipient coronary vascular wall, thereby enhancing the early and late hem compatibility of the stent. We report a case of nonfatal coronary rupture during stent expansion inflating an oversized balloon to high pressure. A variation that uses breakable links to provide additional customization in electrical and mechanical properties is also presented
