Abstract:

Translation from one language into another has many challenges especially when a culture owns particularimportance and enjoys very rich literature. Persian literature which has many creative writers and poets has always beendrawing translator’s attention since long ago; hence, many translators have translated his Persian literature. Culturaldifferences lead to a complex of traditions and habits of idiomatic writings. The current study investigates what strategies has been selected to translate Sadegh Hedayat's Stray Dog fromPersian into English. To this end, the framework outlined by Mona Baker (۱۹۹۲) has been borrowed. Four mainstrategies have been pinpointd and a number of one hundred idiomatic expressions have been extracted from Hedayat'sstory. The findings were also tabulated in terms of the frequency of the usag ef each strategy type. The anaylsisrevealed that while “translation by paraphrasing” was used mostly, both Iranian and foreign translators did not largelyprefer to ''translate by ommission''. These findings can pave the way for future translators to find the most practical andfunctional strategies in their works.
