Abstract:
For many years, there has been no change in the basic structure of the electrical power grid. It has been shown experimentally that the hierarchical, centrally controlled grid of the 20th Century is ill-suited to the needs of the 21st Century. There is a high expectation from the smart power grid for providing sustainable energy services using the bi-directional flow of both data and power enabled by advanced information, communication and control infrastructure. To address the challenges of the existing power grid, the new concept of the smart grid has emerged. A crucial part of the smart grid is prosumers (consumers) who can also produce and share surplus energy with grid or other users. Prosumers have an undeniable role in peak demand management. Hence, it is essential to investigate and review the Prosumers based Energy Management and Sharing (PEMS) along with associated challenges. Concept of smart grid, customers’ role, customers’ payoffs, protection and self-healing are studied in this paper.
