Abstract:

A numerical study was performed for the particulate flow inside a duct-bend combination with square cross section. An Eulerian approach was used to find the flow filed and a Lagrangian approach was employed to solve the particle motion equation. Velocity profiles of particles and flow field were compared with experimental data which a good agreement was seen. After validation of the numerical model for flow Reynolds numbers of 105, different Froude numbers (0.68-∞), bend curvature ratios (3-10) and particle Stokes numbers (10-6-2.68) were studied. Results show that the penetration of particles increases when the curvature ratio increases. Also for some specific Stokes numbers in the range of 0.01-2.0, the flow Reynolds number can strongly affect the penetration of particles. The results also show that for small Froude numbers penetration decreases in the bend although for Stokes number less than 10-5 and greater than 5 Froude number does not affect on penetration.
