Abstract:

Carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption process is a promising method in alleviating the environmental consequencesof fossil fuel combustion, which is the primary cause of climate change. Membrane contactor as a welldeveloped,eco-friendly and waste-free technology is extensively used for gas separation. In this study, firstattempt was made to prepare porous cyclic olefin polymer (COP) membrane for chemical absorption of CO2using membrane contactor. The resultant membrane was characterized in terms of thickness (85 μm), porosity(80%), mean pore size (211 nm), water contact angle (111º), mechanical properties (tensile strength: 4.53 MPa,elongation at break: 4 – 8% and Young´s modulus: 208 MPa), and morphological characteristic. The CO2absorption test that was performed at 27º C, showed the maximum CO2 absorption flux (approximately 8.6×10-5 mol/m2.s) using 1M monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous solution as absorbent. The effect of membraneorientaion was also studied. This study proposed the competitive and new membrane material for MCapplication.
