Abstract:

The masonry wall retrofitted with wire mesh in the inside surface has been commonly adopted in Taiwan for historic building , due to its advantages of economic and not changing the architectural scenery. In this paper , there are five brick wall specimens were tested under horizontally loading. From the test , followings are observed:(1) The main damage mode is the diagonal crack of wall , and the crack of the strengthened layer is close to the crack of the brick wall. (2)During the test , the plaster damaged first , the brick wall and wire mesh damaged at the ultimate loading reached. (3) Increasing the cross-section of the wire in unit width of the wall improves the performance of the wall more effectively than increasing the strength of the plastered mortar. (4) Using larger cross-section wire mesh can avoid all wire shear off under ultimate loading and provides a better energy-absorption. The test result of five specimens are compared with calculation. The calculation is based on theconcept of shear friction. According to the comparison , it indicates the calculated loaddisplacement curves have an approximately good agreement with the test results. In practical usage , using the calculated load-displacement curves , designer can obtain the complete and behavior of the brick wall strengthened with wire mesh.
