Abstract:

The aims of this study was to assess the role of humor in teaching and student learning educational effect of humor in teaching also. Humor plays an important role in making balance and connection between students and teachers. Humor is a favorable tool in the learning process and intercultural perception. It brings excitement and keeps students tuned to their teachers. In the current study, two translations by Farnaz Taimorzuv (۲۰۱۷) and Hossein Tehrani (۲۰۱۶) of the book “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrick Backman, which is abundant in humor, were selected. The transition of humor from the source language to the target language was investigated by the syntactic strategy of Chesterman (۲۰۱۶). During the analysis of humor, the humorous excerpts were identified. Afterwards, the transference of humorous effects was investigated in both Persian translations. The results showed that, in translation of humor at the linguistic level, the translators have not been fully successful. The paper also discusses humor 's functions, its influence in a teaching setting and its contribution to the imagination of the learners. In humorous teaching and learning settings, questionnaires about humorous excerpts were provided to students to see whether they have learned subject matter or not.
