Abstract:

Depletion of crude oil resources and environmental concerns have driven a worldwide research on alternative processes for the production of commodity chemicals. Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a process for flexible production of key chemicals from synthesis gas originating from non-petroleum-based sources. The key component of the Fischer-Tropsch process is the catalyst. Because most chemical and electronic phenomena occur at the catalytic surface, the intrinsic properties of catalytically active metals depend strongly on their size, spatial distribution and even on their shape. In spite of high surface energies and activity of nanoparticles, they are thermally unstable and prone to aggregate into larger clusters. The aggregation of metal particles should be inhibited in order to keep their superior activity in FTS applications. In responseto this, metal organic-frameworks (MOFs) as precursors for the synthesis of nanomaterials may offer extraordinary functionalities. Pyrolysis of MOFs can form highly dispersed metal-embedded graphitized catalysts. For this review, we have only focused on how pristine MOFs can be transformed into Fe and Co-based nanoparticles via MOFMS for Fischer-Tropsch catalytic application.
