Abstract:

Heavy metals in a water system are hazardous to the environment and humans due to the bio-accumulation through the food chain and persistence in nature. In this study the effect of a cationic surfactant on the adsorption of Cr (VI) on mesoporous silica SBA-15 was investigated at ambient temperature and pH=7 in batch system. The mesoporous samples were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nitrogen adsorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). While the unmodified SBA-15 had little or no affinity for the Cr (VI) anionic specie, the surfactant-modified SBA-15 (SMS) showed significant ability to remove of this anion from the aqueous solution.
