Abstract:

Advances in information technology, increasing medical knowledge, and nursing are the reasons for nursing informatics. Iran is at the beginning of the development of nursing informatics, and this study was conducted to assess the needs of the field of nursing informatics.Methods: The present study is a needs assessment study using the Delphi technique. The study population consisted of 45 nursing and medical informatics specialists who were faculty members with doctoral degrees. Targeted sampling and snowballing were performed. Data collection was first done based on the study of global experiences. According to the range model in selected countries and then to complete the skills required by informatics nurses in Iran, two Delphi stages and a focus group session were used. Content analysis was used to analyze the results.Results: 81% of nursing informatics experts considered it necessary and expressed their positive opinion and considered nursing informatics a missing link in applying information knowledge in nursing and a good factor for change. Nursing informatics competencies were identified with 28 items. Computer literacy and seven ICDL skills (100%), an online search for existing and new resources related to nursing care (99%), training of nursing IT specialists to increase interaction between nursing specialists and IT specialists (93%), training and empowerment Nurses in relation to informatics (89%), use of informatics tools and databases for evidence-based decisions (88%), assistance in designing information systems for evidence-based decision-making and performance (85%), design, selection, implementation Building and evaluating systems as a nurse (83%) was one of the IT nursing competencies agreed upon by experts. Also, the roles of graduates in the fields of care with 6 tasks, education, research and management were each determined with 5 main tasks.Conclusion: Nursing informatics can improve nursing education, research, clinic, and management. Applying the results of indigenous needs assessments in future planning will lead to nurses' training to generate excellent health, economic, cultural, and social benefits in the long run.
