An overview of the use of smartphones in educating nursing students

Abstract:

Introduction: Smartphone technology entered the public education environment about two decades ago and has recently entered nursing programs. Information technology has been used in nursing education planning, including in patients' clinics, classrooms, and laboratories. Therefore, the researchers sought to conduct a study to investigatethe use of smartphones in nursing students' education. Methods: The present study is a review study that was conducted in 1399. This study was conducted using the keywords Smartphones, Mobile devices, nursing students' education, and Nursing education and Boolean phrase and in the search databases PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar for English articles on September 2020 (September 1399). Only original articles whose full text was available and relevant to the research topic were included in thestudy; Duplicate titles were also removed using Endnote software. Results: A total of 1988 articles were retrieved. After reviewing the title and abstract, 80 articles were selected, and finally, ten articles were reviewed by reviewing their full text from 2015 to 2020. In all studies, the samples were nursing students. The average of the samples was 156.5 students. There were five descriptive cross-sectional articles, two quasi-experimental articles, one observational article, one randomized controlled article, and one combined method article. South Korea (2 articles), Spain (2 articles), and 1 article from Britain, the USA, China, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan were included in the study. Findings showed that smartphones could be used in applications (2 studies), use of videos (4 studies), charts and images (1 study), access to social networks (such as WhatsApp and Instagram, etc.), and web browsing (3 studies), Recording and documenting (1 study), receiving course instructions from instructors via email (1 study), contacting student counselors (1 study), communication and coordination with other students (1 study) and electronic work sample (1 study) Be used in teaching nursing students. Conclusion: Smartphones can enhance the level of theoretical knowledge, confidence, and clinical practice in nursing students and be a valuable learning tool; However, distraction, anxiety due to separation from the telephone (nomophobia), and theft or damage to the device are among the concerns of using these devices among students.
