Abstract:

Introduction: With the development of information technology, most hospitals, and medical centers, to improve the efficiency and quality of their services, have adopted the use of information technology (IT) and hospital information system (HIS); Nursing Information System (NIS). It is from this system that deals with aspects of nursing, especially the preservation of nursing records. Nurses have an essential role to play in managing patient care and records. It is one of the largest providers of health care and one of the most critical users of HIS; Therefore, successful implementation and acceptance of HIS depend on nurses' acceptance and satisfaction. Also, effective nursing carehas always depended on the quality of data available to the nurse. This study aimed to investigate the impact of nursing information systems on nurses 'performance and examine nurses' satisfaction with these systems. Keywords searched methods: Related English language articles in the title and abstract using the PubMed database (from 1990 to November 2020). Keywords included Health information system, Nurse information system, and Nursing Process. Inclusion criteria included all studies published in English that examined the impact of health and nursing information systems on nurses' performance. Review articles were also excluded from the study. Results: From a total of 1280 studies, 60 articles were selected based on the title. After reviewing the abstract, 15 articles remained to be reviewed. After evaluating the full text of these articles, four eligible articles were selected for final review. In one of these articles, after the system is set up, the time it takes for the nurse to register the data in the system is reduced from 12 days to less than one day. In another study, 75% of the nurses who used the system stated that the patient's medical records were updated regularly due to system reminders; As a result, in these two studies (50%), the quality of nurses' documentation has significantly increased, and they recorded data in the system in less time. In the third study, after launching the system, nurses 'error rate was reduced to zero due to the system error prevention mechanism. After optimizing the system, nurses' satisfaction increased significantly with p-value = 0.01. In the previous study, the participants' average response to the satisfaction question was 4 points, meaning I agree and strongly agree; Therefore, nurses' satisfaction with the nursing information system was higher than the paper system. Conclusion: According to the present study results, it seems that nursing information systems improve the performance of nurses in health care and increase nurses' satisfaction. Due to the increasing use of information technology systems in health and nurses' critical role in recording health care information, the need for further studies in this field is felt.
