Abstract:
From the design point of view, considerable interest attaches to the effects of pure torsion on machine elements - notably shafts - in the elastic and plastic ranges of deformation. This is particularly so since in many cases of practical importance the geometrically simple circular crosssection is no longer acceptable and more complicated shapes have to be adopted. Unlike the case of a cylindrical prism of circular cross-section, in which plane sections remain plane,the effect of applying a torque to a non-circular cylinder results in warping of the section and in its consequent twisting in the three dimensional space. Torsion thus constitutes a boundary-value problem and is always approached accordingly. In this study, the bearings and stresses of beams with elliptical cross section under pure torsion are first investigated using the Prandtle performance method. The beam is then modeled in ANSYS software and the warping ispresented with finite components.
