Abstract:

The seismic stability of a building is based on many different factors, however, the selection of structural systems of the building is known as more important of them. In the design of buildings, in addition to following the general principles of earthquake-resistant design of the structure, that lead to a reduction of seismic force, have to create special conditions to adapt buildings with the impact of seismic. To this end, a doubled element can apply to resist seismic loads through damping seismic responses/displacements of the building. This research aims to assess seismic behavior of steel frames equipped with frictional dampers, under the effect of progressive failure in near -field earthquakes. In this regard, the near -field earthquake records were carefully selected and analyzed. It was found, base-cut, anchor bending, roof displacement, and input energy to the structure increased by removal of the column and beginning of the progressive collapse. Moreover, the adding diametric and chevron frictional dampers were led to the improvement in frame behavior and decrease in the maximum effort of the frame and consequently reduction of the progressive collapse process. However, obtained results demonstrated that the chevron friction damper provided less effect on the frame behavior, compared to the diametric frictional damper. This study also showed that the Landers near-field earthquake has been the impact of more devastating than the other two earthquakes (i.e. Chi-Chi and Tabas) and led to accelerates in the progressive collapse process. Hence, diagonal frictional dampers can be applied as the main solution in this field.
