Abstract:

Background: Alzheimer disease (AD) is one of the prevalent disabling disorders in aging.Since this disease has an important role in the quality of life of the elderly and their caregiversand few studies have been conducted in this area, the aim of this study was to evaluate thequality of life in these patients.Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 182 elder peoplewho were selected through available sampling from February to April 2019. MoCA andLEIPAD were the questionnaires used to assess AD and quality of life (QOL) of subjects.Data analysis was done by path analysis and IBM Spss and MPLUS software. Results: A total of 182 elders with a mean age of 67±5.05 years were interviewed. Amongthese elders, 95 (52.2%), 161 (88.5%) and 130 (71.4%) elders were females, educated, andmarried, respectively. The results indicated that 46 (25.28%) of the elders had low-to-moderateQOL whereas 132 (72.5%) of them suspected AD. QOL and AD were found to be inverselyassociated (β= -0.30) while men (β=-0.31) were more affected than women (β=-0.29). Inaddition, age and AD were the most important factors of QOL. Further, QOL was highlyindirect associated with physical activity through AD. Moreover, AD was highly related to thecognitive functioning component of QOL.Conclusions: One-fourth of the elders had no desirable QOL and about three-fourth suspectedAD. Thus, AD seems to have an inverse relationship with the QOL. Therefore, we recommendfor policy making and for better care of this important group of population.
