Abstract:

smartphones and tablets can contribute a lot to teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) without suffering from many spacio-temporal constraints. These devices can provide greater convenience compared to computers for EFL learners in doing various assignments. To empirically test the effect of out-of-class mobile-based assignments on EFL learners’ progress, the quasi-experiment reported here tested the effect of out-of-class mobile-based role-play assignments on a group of female intermediate EFL learners’ speaking ability. ۴۰ female learners in a private language institute in central Iran, purposefully homogenized in terms of English proficiency through the Online Track Test (https://tracktest.eu), were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The ۲۰ learners in the control group received their ۱۲ ۹۰-minute conversation lessons with no use of mobiles, whereas learners in the experimental group recorded and sent mobile-based role-plays assignments for each lesson. Gains in posttest oral production scores assigned by two trained raters based on ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview guidelines were compared across groups. Independent samples T-test results showed that the group who received the mobile-assisted intervention (M=۱۵.۵, SD=۱.۷۲) significantly outperformed the participants in the control group (M=۱۴, SD=۱.۷۰) in terms of oral production (t= ۲.۷۳, p ≤.۰۵). The findings confirm the effectiveness of mobile-assisted homework assignment in teaching EFL and have practical implications for second language instruction.
