Abstract:

More than ۵.۵ trillion cigarettes are manufactured globally per year, and approximate ۴.۵ trillion cigarette butts (CBs) are already scattered across the globe. The scattering of the CBs has led these hazardous substances to be labelled as one of the world's most influential wastes and environmental threats. Thermochemical techniques may be used to turn biomass and related solid wastes into valuable final products. The pyrolysis technique is a comfortable thermochemical procedure by which biomass is accurately turned into bio chars, biofuels, and briquette solid fuels; and further valuable products such as carbon black, activated carbons, and printing ink. This study reviews available researches and assesses future CBs pyrolysis prospects with an emphasis on transforming CBs to carbonated solid and liquid products. Overall, it was resulted that along with the process factors the treatment methods for CBs play a major role in the yield and composition of the generated products. In addition, more research work needs to be done on the pyrolysis of CBs and in particular on microwave-assisted pyrolysis and hybrid waste pyrolysis.
